HIGHLANDS - ABOUT THE REGION

The picturesque, undulating highlands covered with a mosaic of fishponds, small forests, meadows and stony fields all come together to create the beautiful setting for the many charming Renaissance towns and villages. This is the birthplace of Gustav Mahler, world-famous composer and conductor. The beauty of this landscape can almost be heard in his music. You can visit his birthplace in Kaliste or the Gustav Mahler Museum in the historical town of Jihlava.

Trebic is known not only for its regular "Potato Festival", but also for its Jewish Quarter, which is gradually being restored. Apart from the beautiful basilica, the monument and museum devoted to the first printing of the Bible in Kralice are also of great interest. There is a historical event held annually in Jemnice called the Barchan Festival. This tradition dates back to the times of King Jan Luxembourg, who left his wife Queen Elisabeth under the cover of the commons in order to protect her in times of battle.

And finally Telc, a UNESCO Heritage Site. Enjoy the historical and unspoilt town centre with its unmistakable Renaissance influence, interestingly integrated with the rest of the urban complex, with its sgraffito decorated buildings. The Jan Zrzavy Gallery (the world famous avant-garde painter) is accessible to the public from Telc Castle. Slavonice is another Renaissance jewel in the Czech crown. Late Gothic and Renaissance architecture create the charming atmosphere of the town square. It was in 1277 that King Otakar II first drew people2s attention to this delightful town. Jaromerice nad Rokytnou Chateau is one of the most outstanding Baroque constructions in Europe. It is a two-storey Baroque chateau with a French-style garden and English-style park with numerous sculptures of ancient gods and goddesses.

The historical railway lines around the Renaissance town of Jindrichuv Hradec were built in 1897. When travelling along them you can really enjoy the captivating countryside of fields and meadows interpersed with granite boulders, as well as the impressive and vast forests. This is a narrow-gauge railway line, which has historical steam-engine trains in regular operation. Botanists can appreciate the rich and rare flora of the unique Mohelno Serpentinite Steppe located on the romantic banks of the Jihlava River. Just a stone´s throw away is the Trebon basin, a 700 square kilometre UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This is an immense area containing hundreds of ponds, canals, rivers, meadows, and forests - a spectacular landscape. There are many protected species of flora and fauna, enough to satiate the appetites of any nature lover. Many years ago this was a swampland, but during the Renaissance period a local builder, the famous Jacob Krcin of Jelcany, constructed a unique system of ponds and canals. Today this is the home of the popular Czech fresh-water fish, the Trebon carp. The town of Trebon is a well preserved example of Mediaeval urbanism. The town was mainly built by the mighty Rosenberg family from 1366. Its fortifications with their five gates were protected by the Golden Canal and Svet (World) Lake, which were constructed in the 16th century. In about 1700 the Renaissance Rosenberg arsenal was converted into a brewery which today continues to brew the renowned Regent beer.

What more can be added? Good drinks and food - traditional highland potato dishes in charming local restaurants, original Bernard or Regent beers, and Trebon carp.
