Krkonossky narodni park - KRNAP (Giant Mountain National Park in the Czech Republic) was founded in 1963 as the first national park in the Czech Republic. It covers an area of 370 km2 (570 km2 with a protective zone). It divides into three zones according to the level of preservation - I and II are the most strictly protected zones. The Krkonose Mountains are located northeast of Bohemia. They form a natural border between Bohemia and Poland with the actual borderline running along the main mountain2s crests. The Krkonose Mountain area is only 40 km long and 20 km wide with its Czech part counting for about two thirds of the total area. The Krkonose region features the highest mountain of the Czech Republic -Sněžka (1602m) and the spring of the mighty Labe / Elbe River. The treasures of this area include the unique northern tundra on the mountain range (e. g.Upa Peat) and an extraordinary flora and fauna. Examples of the wide range of traditional architecture can be found in Paseky nad Jizerou and several historically and urbanistically interesting towns of the foot-hills, e.g. Vrchlabí, Trutnov, Jilemnice…
